The change of season brings with it dropping temperatures, colorful leaves, and another writing contest. Yes, that’s right. It’s again time for the Fall Writing Frenzy. The rules are to write a 200 word (max) story based on one of fourteen pre-selected photographs. Here’s the one I chose.

And here’s my story:

The Day After the End of Daylight-Saving-Time

“Once upon a time in a kingdom closer than you realize, the sun fell out of the sky. It wasn’t with a boom and a bash, but a flutter and a flash. There was no twilight, no twinkle, no violet-hued sky. No in-between time. No warning.”

Her voice was drenched with darkness, echoing eerily everywhere. “If they couldn’t see Today, would Tomorrow still rise?”

“But then the fireflies burned their butts and saved the day!” Her brother’s smile swam through his bubble beard.

“No!” She slammed her fist into the bathwater spawning a tsunami that sloshed against the tub tiles and not-yet-clean toes. “That’s not how the story goes.”

“It’s way cooler now.” His fingers tunneled through the toys bobbing nearby. His voice, a slim shadow of hers, swirled towards the drain. “You don’t think so?”

“Stop interrupting! Mom put me in charge.”

He snatched the shampoo bottle from the shelf, brandishing it like a microphone.

The towel in her hands was the red velvet sky missing from the story. She shook it open and began again. “This is a bedtime tale.”

“Wait, what?” His hands and hopes splashed down. “It’s 4pm. I’m not tired yet!”
